NEW!!!

American Horror Story

If you enjoy creepy, gruesome, and bizzare horror movies, like me, you won't be able to resist this new series. It's fantastic! The show is like watching a horror movie with parts that will make you jump, cause your jaw to drop, and constantly keep you guessing.
Here's the basic plot (without spoiling). A mother (Connie Britton), father (Dylan McDermott), and their teenage daughter move to LA from Boston in an attempt strengthen a shaky relationship. Little does the family know that they have moved into a haunted mansion. In each episode we learn more and more about the ghosts residing in the house. One for example is a Frankenstein-esque doctor (Charles Montgomery) and ether addict who performs creepy experiments in the basement.
Watch the first two or three episodes; I'm sure you'll be hooked!

Happy Endings

I am vaguely reminded of Friends when I watch Happy Endings. The show follows the lives of six friends including a couple who has just split up when Alex leaves Dave at the alter, another couple (Brad and Jane) and two single friends, Penny and Max. If you're into sarcasm, wit and one-liners, and are in your 20s or 30s, you will probably enjoy the humour this show pumps out. It's full of sexual innuendos, social drinking, and

The Walking Dead

Look out zombies are on the loose! The basic premise is: a small group of survivors attempt to survive in a world full of zombies. The premiere of the first season (2010) was phenomenal, packed with action and suspense. As season one went on, the show lost some of its original shine as the the characters lacked development and unique personalities. I continued to watch the entire season, but did not expect much as I saw it continue to go downhill. I will give it a chance this season to see where it goes.

Game of Thrones

Yes, this series is about kings, queens, and knights with swords, but it is far from your average medieval story. Instead, Game of Thrones is a sort of global-warming horror story where rival dynasties fight for control over the Seven Kingdoms. Within the kingdoms, summers are measured in years, rather than months, and winters can extend for decades.

The first episode begins with a breakneck chase between knights and a horde of "Others", which can only be described as blood-hungry zombies! No, it's not comparable to a medieval Walking Dead (though I did enjoy the first season). This gory action sequence is the only one of its kind for a while, or at least the first 6-7 episodes.

In this universe of wenches, dwarfs, armor and loincloths, be prepared for some seriously sexy-times scenes as well as gruesome close-ups of battle and gore!

Breaking Bad

This phenomenal series features Bryan Cranston, whom you may know from the series Malcom in the Middle. While you might recognize his face, you certainly will not recognize his character! Cranston goes from loveable, slap-stick humoured sitcom dad to a dad with a darker side who will do anything to ensure that his family is provided for.

Within the first few episodes of season one, Cranston (Walter White) is diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer, is faced with the fear dying and leaving his family in great debt, and finally finds what he thinks will be a solution to all of their money problems. As a high school science teacher and failed science professional, Walter teams up with a past student to become a meth maker and dealer. His naivety in the world of drugs is the cause for numerous darkly comedic moments.

I will admit, this show is not for everyone. It is satirical, witty, and dark, causing me to both laugh aloud and to wince watching a man on the verge of a complete breakdown. If you liked Fargo and/or Weeds, you will probably enjoy Breaking Bad, too. Check it out!

How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother is geared towards the 20 and 30-somethings crowd. It focuses on the social dynamics between a group of friends, similar to the ever-popular Friends, but with more modern, edgy, and a little twisted humour.

Here's a tidbit to whet your appetite. One episode introduced the "slap bet" where the winner of the bet slaps the loser as hard as he/she possibly can. In a twist of events, the "slap commissioner" gives the winner the right to ten slaps immediately in succession OR five slaps available to the winner for all of eternity. As you can well imagine, the following sporadic episodes where the slaps occur never fail crack me up!

Modern Family

This is not your average comedic sitcom as it deals with real, up-to-date issues in a hilarious and unpolitically-correct way while it follows the lives of one family (father, Jay, who has remarried a much younger woman and her ridiculously proper young son, Jay's gay son, his partner and their adopted Asian daughter, and Jay's daughter with her "typical" family consisting of a husband and three kids.

After a couple of views, you will come to love the strong characters including: Gloria, Jay's new wife, whose Colombian accent often causes confusion; Manny, Gloria's 11-year-old son, who doesn't leave the house without slacks and a dress shirt and is often seen sipping espresso with his pinky, and Phil, Jay's son-in-law, who is a "cool dad". He acts like a parent yet talks like a peer and calls it "peerenting". His nerdy nature is always cause for his kids' eye-rolls and embarrassment.

  1. You also have to mention "Robin" in How I Met Your Mother" is Canadian. The actress is actually from Vancouver. The show slams Canadians left and right and it's hilarious! The scene in one episode when "Barney" trashes our coloured money is fall on the floor funny!

  2. Absolutely, thanks for mentioning that! I watched a rerun the other day and saw Robin drinking out of a ceramic Tim Horton's mug - amazing.
